Alfred William Lambourne was born in England in 1850. When he was a teenager, Alfred’s family joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and moved to Salt Lake City. As a youth, Lambourne showed an interest in the arts and was encouraged to pursue them. He began painting for the Salt Lake Theater soon after he arrived in Utah.

Lambourne didn’t attend any school to receive art training. Instead, he opted to teach himself the finer points of art and refine his style over time. Alfred focused on many aspects of art early in his career. He excelled in drawing and painting, and he even did some writing as he considered that artistic expression. In fact, Alfred published over ten books – many of which contained his own illustrations. He became friends with multiple Utah artists throughout his life including Thomas Moran and James T. Harwood. Alfred’s career as an artist took him to a variety of locations in the United States. He painted scenes in Colorado, Arizona, California and along the east coast. He continued to paint until his death in 1926.

Alfred Lambourne is best known for his beautiful landscapes of Utah and other scenic western locations. Alfred had a particular love for the Great Salt Lake. He referred to this great body of water as the ‘Inland Sea’ and painted many of its coasts and the stunning view of the mountains beyond. Additionally, Alfred traveled to and painted many of the lakes in the Wasatch Mountain range.
