Herman Hugo Haag was born in Stuttgart, Germany in 1871. At the age of eleven his mother sent him to Utah to live with family members. When he was twelve Herman was afflicted with a serious illness. This illness confined Herman to his bed which enabled him to spend a lot of time drawing and painting.

At age nineteen Herman moved to Europe as an art missionary. Later, he studied for two years in Paris and had the opportunity to visit many prestigious art galleries. Upon returning to Utah he worked on murals in the Salt Lake Temple and taught and the University of Utah. Tragically, Herman Haag died at only the age of twenty-four as a result of his poor health.
