James Stovall Morris is an American painter best known for his bold oil and watercolor landscapes of the Southwest. He worked and painted primarily in Santa Fe, New Mexico alongside fellow artist John Sloan

James Morris was born in Marshall, Missouri in 1898. He studied art at Washington and Jefferson College and the Cincinnati Art Academy. Later, after visiting Santa Fe and becoming acquainted with John Sloan, Morris attended the Art Students League in New York City. Upon completing his art studies he returned to Santa Fe to make it his home and paint its surrounding scenery. Morris passed away in 1973.
