Calvin Fletcher was born in Provo, Utah in 1882. His artistic abilities were evident early on in his life. Calvin was most interested in sculpting, however, because there were no teachers available in the local area he opted to try painting instead.<\/p>
Calvin studied with J. B. Fairbanks<\/a> for a year before he began attending Brigham Young Academy. He later attended Brigham Young University<\/a> and graduated with a B.S. and certificate in Fine Arts. Calvin Fletcher also attended school at New York City\u2019s Columbia University, and studied in London, Paris, and Chicago. After his studies, Calvin returned to Utah and became the head of the art department at Utah State University<\/a> \u2013 a position he kept for 40 years.<\/p> Calvin Fletcher is known primarily for his landscapes of Utah, although he also did portraits and still lifes. He painted with a variety of mediums including: oil, watercolor, pastel, and charcoal.\u00a0 Calvin was considered a modernist, however, many of his works are done in a classical design. Calvin always strove to learn new principles and deepen his understanding of art.
